James Currier Wins the 2018 SPEC MIX BRICKLAYER 500 Virginia Regional
51-year-old mason James Currier is returning the Las Vegas arena for the second year in a row. Last year he finished just shy of 500 brick, and took a lot of lessons from his first time competing. Currier had never even heard of the SPEC MIX BRICKLAYER 500 until just before the Virginia regional in 2017. He noticed an advertisement on his phone, and tracked down his local rep to learn more. There weren’t any spots available, so Currier just went to the regional to watch. 15 minutes before the event started a mason dropped out, and Currier stepped up. Not only did he get to participate, but he qualified for Las Vegas. This year he just hopes to improve on his performance.
Now Currier is back for his second consecutive championship and promises the results will be much different this year. His new strategy is to increase his stamina by working out, and to build a few practice walls before he flies out to Las Vegas.
Currier is married with three daughters and operates his own business, Top Notch Brick and Block, in Norfolk, VA. He’s been laying brick since he was 18-years-old, and he’s proud of the area that’s taught him his craft. “We come from a good bunch of mason in Virginia, fast and clean, we can hold our own with anybody.”
