Matt Jones wins the 2018 SPEC MIX BRICKLAYER 500 Arizona Regional
As cliché as it may sound, the third time really was the charm for Matt Jones of Sargon Masonry in Phoenix, AZ. He qualified for Las Vegas after coming up short the previous two years. He took lessons from each defeat and learned that the main element he was missing was practice. “We did two full walls in the yard this year, we wanted to focus on the overhand technique on the backside, it’s just a strange way to lay brick.”
Jones quit laying brick full-time five years ago when he started supervising. He found out about the SMBL500 from a QUIKRETE sales rep and decided to give it a shot. When he didn’t qualify, Jones flew out to Las Vegas just to watch and was blown away at the size of the event.
This year, Jones just wants to enjoy the moment, “Of course I’d love to win, but it’s just neat to be able to hang out with the best masons in the country. It’s quite an experience, not many people get to compete and make those kinds of friendships.”
The 41-year-old mason doesn’t get much time to slow down when he isn’t working or practicing for Las Vegas. He has a wife and two kids, and loves spending time with his family. He started laying brick when he was 15 years old. His father was a mason, “back when you could take your kid to work.” He even got his first set of stitches from a broken brick. It’s a profession he’s known most of his life.
