ROBERT MILLER WINS THE 2018 SPEC MIX BRICKLAYER 500 CALIFORNIA REGIONAL
For 54-year-old Robert Miller of John Jackson Masonry in Sacramento, the SPEC MIX BRICKLAYER 500 is a contest that brings him back to his roots. Laying primarily block with his company currently, Miller relies on his 38 years of bricklaying experience, going all the way back to his days in Pennsylvania when he started working with brick and natural stone. He much prefers working with brick, claiming it “doesn’t weigh as much as block, and it looks better.”
His love of the trade and his experience with a trowel was all Miller needed to qualify for the World Championship. He didn’t put in any practice; he just confidently walked onto the lot of Silverado Building Materials in Sacramento and won. But he did mention he’ll be putting in a little extra effort for Las Vegas. “I’ll clean my level up,” he said.
This will be Millers second shot at making the SPEC MIX BRICKLAYER 500 Hall of Fame. He fell just short of placing during his last attempt several years ago, and he’s back officially after his seventh overall attempt at qualifying. Miller is appreciative of this event and the opportunity it’s given him. He’s also seen adjustments in the rules over the past few years as a positive. “I like that they tightened up the rules, you get descent work out of these guys to promote the trade.”
He also believes that having better craftsmanship as a focal point will help attract younger talent, “Everybody likes to compete in something. You’re talking about the best in the country. Younger people are going to look at that.”
